# Recording in Portrait Mode
While the 16:9 ratio is the still standard today, it doesn't make a lot of sense to publish at videos on TikTok in that same format.
Recording in 9:16 can be confusing, but really all the rules of cinematography still apply despite the ratio.
# Using an Overlay
I am using several overlays when I record, here's an example:
![[Alignment 1.png]]
## 1. Black Bars (Vertical)
It's important to be able to visualize what your video is going to look like in Portrait (9:16), the black bars will help you to do just that.
## 2. Safe Area
Let's say you're watching a video on TikTok, you notice that on top of that video are several buttons, a search bar, a title and a description, etc...
You have to mind those when making a video, because they might hide important elements you're trying to show.
This Rectangle is safe for TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram.

## 3. Composition Guides
These will come very helpful when you need to align things together, well... compositing (I won't be making a tutorial on composition, well not yet at least)
